Repurposing the Garage Roof

Our architect came up the idea to convert our garage roof into a garage terrace.

We'd asked him to tell us how we could build more living space over the garage — a den for Mike or office for Amy — while at the same time keeping as much of the upper floor of the house intact as possible.

The first thing we realized was that to access that area would mean sacrificing a significant portion of either the existing upstairs bathroom or guest room. Secondly, his drawings showed that to maintain the angle of the back roof line, we'd end up with an oddly sloped shed roof and very little space for the cost—essentially a closet.

This is when his vision combined with all he'd heard us talk about for the landscape. The result was a garage terrace that could serve as a green roof and/or additional growing space.
