Metal Roofs - The Perfect Complement!

Early June…After the siding was put up, custom roofing was back out to complete their roofing work. These guys started with us back on March 25th covering the garage roof with an impermeable membrane for future water catchment purposes. On April 2nd a team of six roofers industriously put up our main roof in record time — one half day — to give our house a hat. They returned in early June to add a core design element to the exterior aesthetic of the home - a metal roof!

At one point, Mike and I contemplated a full metal roof for two reasons: 1) the beautiful look of a metal roof and 2) our assumption that a metal roof would be cleaner for capturing rainwater for our garden. Personally, I have always loved the look of homes around us with metal roofs. However, I also have such an acute sense of hearing - I can literally hear a pin drop ;) - so I was a bit worried that when it rained hard, it would be a bit loud. Perhaps that concern was a stretch.

However, after working with our water harvesting expert, Marcus de la Fleur, we confirmed that the asphalt shingles our architect - GC Mike Kollman had picked out would be a very clean option to capture rainwater from. So in considering our budget and all the different aspects we needed to invest in to renovate our home to make us total Happy Boolos, we recognized we needed to be financially practical. A full metal roof would cost more both for materials and labor to install. So we decided on metal roofs where you could actually see the roof, thus fully enjoying any extra investment required. Given the southside of our top roof would have solar panels and you really can’t see the top roof from the ground, we chose to install metal roofs to decorate our front porch and our side entrance overhang.

As we were going for greener shades on the James Hardie siding, we selected a mission brown roof shingle by GAF Timberline and dark bronze metal roofing materials by Peterson Aluminum Corporation.

It was super fun to see the team from Custom Roofing put up these beautiful roofs that become a key aesthetic element of the overall house color palette.
